Government Affairs Update -March 2010 .
A proposal to mandate recycling and composting in ![]() The Austin City Council has directed the city’s staff and stakeholders to recommend amendments to the current ordinance for reducing waste disposal and increasing recycling, reuse, and composting in the City of Austin. Austin adopted a “Zero Waste” goal and the Greater Austin Restaurant Association believes we must have a say in how the City aims to achieve that goal.
Ed Norton, County Line, Robert Mayfield, Dairy Queen, and Darryl Wittle, President of the Greater Austin Restaurant Association, along with a number to other restaurateurs have been working to represent our interests before the city, but they feel that a professional lobbyist will help us to be more effective. The Greater Austin Restaurant Association (“Greater ARA”) has engaged Richard Suttle with Armbrust & Brown, L.L.P. to represent our group in this matter. To that end we need your personal and financial support to shape the recycling ordinance. If you can, please come and participate in the meetings (http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/sws/recyclingordreform.htm). Even if you cannot commit your personal time to join us, please contribute to our efforts by sending a contribution to help support our selected lobbyist. .

Austin, TX 78768Government Affairs: The Necessary Evil
Although many business owners focus more on their day to day businesses than what's going on at the state or national capitol, the fact is that politics affects everyone who owns or works for a restaurant. Insurance rates, tax rates, liquor laws, foodsafety issues, highway regulations, tourism and travel . . . all of these are regulated by your local, state and federal representatives in one way or another.
The Greater Austin Restaurant Association represents Austin-area hospitality interests and works with all of the various agencies within Austin and surrounding cities to defeat or promote city ordinances that will have an impact on the restaurant industry. The TRA is your 24/7 lobbying agent at our State Capitol, continuously working to defeat or promote legislation that will have an impact on the restaurant industry. The restaurant association is your industry watchdog. Get involved!
There are plenty of ways that you can make a difference in the fight for what's right for the industry. Why not become a part of our local grass-roots group of dedicated restaurateurs and suppliers?
